You may remember a while ago when we posted information about our special edition Peace Bag, which we made in memory of Mackenzie’s little sister Grace. Twenty-five dollars from every bag purchased was donated to the Grace Griffis Scholarship, started on the behalf of her memory by her fellow Greenwich Central School classmates. We were honored to be able to help out, and we were even more honored when we learned who the first student to receive said scholarship is: Jacob Houston.
Jacob may only have graduated high school a few weeks ago, but he is already a very respected and talented artist. Well known around our small town for his paintings and prints, he’s had numerous exhibitions both close to home and out of state, and had his paintings commissioned and used as covers for numerous local publications. His unique and sweet interpretation of both the familiar and home grown as well as topics more far afield show a maturity and skill far beyond his years.
Jacob really is the perfect person to win the first Grace Griffis scholarship. A gentle and sweet guy (we won’t get any mushier than that, Jake, we promise!) with incredible talent, he embodies so many things that Grace did. After all, the scholarship was to be awarded to “a graduating senior with similar artistic interests as well as a strong background in community service,” and darn it if Jake doesn’t fit the bill perfectly.
We’re thrilled that we’re able to say that we’ve helped Jacob on his way with his sure to be successful art career, but what we really want to say is “thank you”. Thank you to every single Meatbagz fan out there who purchased a special edition Peace Bag to enable us to raise money for this scholarship. Thank you to the fans who bought other bags, giving us the ability to donate all of the proceeds from the Peace Bags and the encouragement to keep making them in general. Thank you to Erin Sievers and the GCS class of 2001, who suggested this scholarship and did fundraising on their own. And thank you to Jake, who truly deserves this scholarship, and makes us so happy that he won it.
We can’t see what you create next, Jake!
